Community Garden

So, with spring “in full bloom” so to speak, it’s time to start thinking about the CSA you may join or planing your own garden or becoming involved with a community garden.

I personally do not have a lot of experience in growing my own food. I have grown a few things, but not much. I have supported a local CSA and of course the farmer’s markets, but this year I am starting a little “community garden” with my nephew.

He had a garden with some lovely items in it for the past couple of summers. He’s really enjoyed the art of growing food and I think he’s learned a lot from it. He recently got an apartment and now doesn’t really have the space to create a garden. I have the space, but not the know how or the physical stamina to turn our ivy grown area into a garden. So, we’re partnering up and going to make a garden of our own!

We are hoping to grow several different greens, peppers, peas, cucumbers, tomatoes, herbs, squash, and cantaloupe. The idea behind our garden is he & I will both have access to anything we want and we will both put in time to help tend the garden. He doesn’t live right around the corner from me, but he lives close enough that he can come by at least once a week to help tend the garden and take any items that are ready to be picked. My hope is that we’ll do so well that I will be encouraged to continue my garden and expand what we grow next year!

I am really excited about this and I will try to post pictures of the “before” and “after” to keep you updated on our progress!
